Who We Are and What We Do

Prague’s first Aussie-styled gastro pub is the venue for the whole family! The Down Under is a dream come true for owners Ashley McGlynn and Meagan Hasa.

With five-years experience running The Pie Shop in Prague, this is the next venture for foodie and fun loving dad Ashley and with former London chef and owner of award winning Chateau Hostacov by his side, the Down Under is bound to be a success in Prague.

A combination of cafe, kids corner, gastro pub and sports bar! Unique it is and we plan to be a player in Vinohrady’s cafe and bar community.

Bringing a tasty menu, great customer service, comfy decor and furnishing and the unique element of kids corner and sports bar, make this the only place in Prague to make, mum, dad and the kids smile.

Our menu is inspired by pubs across the land down under and aims to keep all pallets happy and offer dishes that you won’t find anywhere else in this great city.

Our drinks menu will be, simply put, on point! An inspirational drinks list designed by award-winning publican and former world flair bartending champion, our good friend Leeroy Peterson of the Elk and Pea in Canberra, these will be tastes not yet seen in Prague.

Of course, as it is well known, Australians are the world’s coffee snobs, and we will bring a typically Aussie style service to our drinks menu, thanks to our good friends at Bristot, the roast will be rich and the milk will be creamy, to ensure a perfect cup, drink in or takeaway.

And, of course, you can get The Pie Shop’s famous pies, eat in, or takeaway, any time you like.

Ashley McGlynn

A journalist by trade, and foodie by heart, Ashley has never been far from hospitality.

Sydney born and raised, his first job was washing dishes at 14 in the award winning Vaucluse House Tea Rooms at Wentworth House in Sydney. Next stop was the kitchen, floor, bars, nightclubs and then Prague!

The decision to move to the Czech capital came after ten years living in Sydney and regional New South Wales with his wife Katerina, and the desire to start a family, so close to his wife’s parents they moved.

Since living in Prague he has also started and operated the highly successful Pie Shop and moonlighted as a tour guide.

Meagan Hasa

With a passion for fine food and drink and having a good time, Meagan was always going to be drawn to the hospitality trade. Born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa with a stint on her grandfathers pecan nut farm in between, upon graduating from the Pro Arte school as a qualified chef, the big lights of London beckoned immediately. Working her way up from freshly arrived graduate to restaurant manager she honed her skills and sharpened her natural penchant for precision. It is there that she met her Czech/Australian husband Vojta.

Young, naive and full of optimism and energy, they relocated to Czech and converted the abandoned Chateau Hostacov into an award winning hotel, restaurant and events venue. Starting a family and getting an apartment in Prague, they discovered the lack of a child-friendly venue they could meet up with friends with young families that did good food, had the right atmosphere and that welcomed them day and night. To dream of a venue that did that, and played the Rugby or cricket would have been too much to ask. Thus the seed for the idea that would become the Down Under was born!
